There are days when I stare at my closet and have no idea what to wear. Days when I need to go from school meetings to social events without missing a beat– I can’t be over dressed for a teacher’s conference but need to look my fashionable best at a luncheon.  So what fills the gap between conservative jackets and over the top Roland Mouret dresses? I spotted EAU DE MARS during one of my regular trawls for new companies to feature in the Tee Directory.  They immediately caught my eye with their unique, artsy designs.  Started by veterans in the mainstream fashion industry, the brand was created out of a desire to break out of the box most street fashion brands confine themselves to.  EAU DE MARS has three collections: Classics, Premium, and Limited Edition, each with their own qualities and design styles.  All of the shirts are made with eco-friendliness in mind, which means organic materials and processes are used whenever possible.

My style has changed such that I no longer wear these kinds of designs, but I still can’t help but stop and look whenever I see funky character illustrations, such as the one featured on “Undercover in Creature Town“.  I like how EAU DE MARS chose to stick with a simple black and white palette, which helps balance out the weird visual style of the design.   This shirt is limited to 200 pieces.

This design, “Cosmic Eskimo” isn’t available yet (leaving me to wonder why all three colorways are up in the store with no preorder option, even, but I digress), but I had to post it because it’s so weirdly awesome in the same way as the one above.  Once again, this is one of those instances where the one-color print looks great, and works well with the eerieness of the illustration.

EAU DE MARS is off to a great start with a good concept and a bevy of above-average designs.  Their web presence is attractive and easy to navigate.  My only qualm — once again — is how almost half their store is comprised of “Coming Soon” products which aren’t even available for preorder.  So while at first glance it looks like there are more than 5 shirts to choose from, a second leaves you disappointed that there are, in fact, only two.  Nevertheless, a minor issue.  Be sure to check them out, and use our exclusive coupon code for 15% off your order!

“Left or standing. Standing or left standing.” The phrase heard over and over again during Narciso Rodriguez’s show, as it turns out, was an installation piece by the artist Bruce Nauman in which guests had to walk through a trapezoidal room filled with yellow fluorescent light. But while Nauman’s desire was to create anxiety, the collection itself was anything but. Instead, it was easily Rodriguez’s best: chic, intelligent and, in true Narciso style, sublimely architectural.

With a clean and uncluttered palette, Rodriguez was left to focus on elements like color, cut and visual appearance.

Tags: Poncho, Tomas Maier

With color-blocking as a trend in Spring 2011, this Tomas Maier cashmere poncho is right on point. An effortless way to pull of the look without having to put much thought into it, this stone and pink poncho can be worn about a trillion different ways (give or take a few). Though I’m wearing a poncho right now, I’m pretty sure this Tomas Maier one would be a bit less confining than mine. I’m almost positive mine is less of a poncho and more of a Christmas tree skirt and no one wanted to tell me I was wrong so they just went with it. Wear it now with a long sleeve shirt and thick tights, then belt it with shorts in the spring time.
